Gärten in Naturen
The existing site of the IGA Berlin 2017 represents different types of urban green spaces, that are very typical for Berlin and are particularly well suited to demonstrate the three themes of the actual Strategie Stadtlandschaft (Urban Landscape Strategy) as well as the four natures defined by the well-known Berlin-based urban ecologist Ingo Kowarik: nature of wilderness, agriculture
nature, nature of horticulturally designed nature and urban-industrial nature. As gardens are an expressions of man’s relationship with nature, we use gardens to visualize, re-interpret, and re-discover different types of natures while building a link between communities.
Therefore the overall concept of “Gardens in Four Natures“ is a series of garden patches carved into the four existing but disconnected site conditions of the IGA Berlin 2017. These gardens visualize the Genius Loci, enhance the existing structure of the existing spaces and lead visitors to discover the typical ecologies of Berlin. Gardens in Four Natures will be experienced through a mesh of intertwined paths that dissolve the boundaries between man and nature. The design concept is a holistic expression of landscape strategies addressing four major urban challenges relating to the site and beyond: riparian restoration and biotope management, food and energy production, stormwater management and water purification, building of community links and enabling collective stewardship.
